2008 Inductees to the BC Sports Hall of Fame INDUCTEES/ HONOURED MEMBERS

Each year, through an extensive review and selection process, a few select individuals are inducted into the BC Sports Hall of Fame in recognition of their outstanding sporting achievements. Once they are inducted, we recognize them as Honoured Members of the BC Sports Hall of Fame.

The athletes, teams, and individuals whose stories are celebrated here come from all parts of the province, cover the full spectrum of sport and span over a century of BC's sport history. These are our Honoured Members and Honoured Teams. These are their stories.

Alison Sydor To Mountain Bike Hall of Fame

Alison Sydor was inducted into the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame in 2007.

The MTBHOF, located in Crested Butte, Colorado, has a strong U.S. bias (the first Canadian was only inducted a few years ago, and we have had long-running correspondence with them over Alison and a number of other Canadians), but we are still very happy to announce that the three-time world champion and Olympic silver medalist is included in the list of four individuals to be inducted this year.

Other inductees include Hill Abell (Advocacy), Sal Ruibal (Journalism) and Frank Wadelton (Industry).

UVIC Distinguished Alumni Award - 1997

The Alumni Association of the University of Victoria Distinguished Alumni Award.

Alison Sydor is the reigning world mountain bike champion, for the third year in a row. A 1989 UVic graduate in Biochemistry, she was named the Canadian Press female athlete of the year in 1996, and world cyclist of the year by the influential Velo News.

In addition to her outstanding achievements, Alison is also the honorary chairperson of Operation Rednose, a community service offering free rides to party goers during the Christmas season. Through mountain biking, she teaches practical life skills, such as goal setting, anger management, environmental awareness, fitness and nutrition, to youths aged 12 to 18 involved in a non-profit organization she helped to found called "Kids on the Shore".

Alison is an alumna who continues to excel and shows every indication of remaining a top competitor and a high profile athlete for years to come. She has become a role model for young women around the world, and the University of Victoria Alumni Association is delighted to count her as a member.
